Parents & Families: Engaging in your student’s career readiness

Although broadening career options and securing a job that leads to a sustainable source of income is the primary motivation for choosing to attend college for both students and their families, career development isn’t always top of mind for students once they land on campus. They’re navigating a multitude of transitions relating to life skills, independence, self-discovery and identity development, relationships, and much more, that occupy a significant amount of time, energy, and emotional resources. What might be surprising to students and their families is that career development is a process that encompasses all these things mentioned above and are essential components of becoming career ready. Your student’s career readiness is a journey that will naturally unfold as students learn more about themselves and the world. It’s a privilege for us in the Career Management Center to witness the personal and professional growth students experience during their time in the College of Business. And it’s our purpose to inspire and empower engagement in the lifelong career journey, guiding and supporting students as they make career decisions, create meaning of their experiences, and pursue connections to opportunities.

Scope of Services

Our comprehensive Career Management Center offers a broad scope of services, programming, and resources to support your student along their career development journey. From major and career exploration, resume development, and interview preparation to professional mentoring, career fairs, and job offer negotiation, we support students with resources and tools that help them build the confidence to navigate a lifetime of fulfilling career possibilities.

The Career Management Center supports both undergraduate and graduate students from the moment they arrive on campus as well as degree-conferring alumni of the College of Business.

Our Philosophy

We understand that each student is on their own unique career journey with different life experiences, strengths, values, and interests. Our expert team of career counselors are culturally competent and take a student-focused, holistic approach when working with students. Understanding that many factors influence one’s career decision-making, we support students in clarifying their broader needs and consider external influencing factors in helping them find meaning in their experiences. We encourage students to connect with us from the moment they arrive on campus as they explore career options, and regularly as they navigate decisions which will shape their career readiness and impact their overall career success.

Supporting Your Student

We recognize the important role parents and families may play in their student’s career decision-making and career readiness. From complex decisions that impact career choice to the social capital and networks that broaden access to opportunities, the influence parents and families have can be substantial. Thus, we provide information and resources so that parents and families have effective tools to support their students in their exploration and career readiness journeys.

Our team encourages students to fully drive their work with us and be autonomous in their career-related decision-making. While the Career Management Center does not correspond with parents and families about their student’s engagement with us, students are invited to drop into our office during our operating hours, schedule 1-on-1 career counseling appointments, and attend all our career events and programming throughout the academic year. We encourage you to look through our website to get a comprehensive look at all the resources and career-related programming we offer to students.
