Your First 30 Minutes on Handshake
Five quick steps that improve your results right away.
Step 1. Update Your Career Interests
Handshake uses your career interests to match you with opportunities. This is a top reason students either find relevant roles – or feel frustrated by what they see.
Your interests help determine:
✅ Which jobs and internships appear in your feed
✅ Which employers can find and message you
✅ Which events and opportunities are recommended to you
In your Handshake profile, you can update:
✅ What you are looking for right now (internship, full-time job, campus job)
✅ Roles you’re interested in
✅ Industries you want to explore
✅ Locations you’re open to

Tip: Your interests aren’t permanent. As your goals change, your Handshake interests should too.
Step 2. Upload a Resume
You don’t need a perfect resume to get started, but you will need a resume in Handshake to apply to positions.
- Choose whether to make your primary resume visible to employers
- You can update and add new versions anytime (one one version can be visible at a time)
- The Career Management Center can help you improve your resume when you are ready
Step 3. Save a Few Jobs or Internships
If you are feeling overwhelmed by too many results, or seeing roles that don’t fit, use search filters to narrow in on relevant options.
Save positions you are interested in to apply when you’re ready. Be sure to pay close attention to application deadlines.
Step 4. Follow Employers That Interest You
Following employers helps Handshake work for you without requiring you to search from scratch every time.
When you follow an employer, you’re more likely to:
✅ See new jobs and internships as they’re posted
✅ Get notified about employer info sessions and events
✅ Stay aware of organizations actively recruiting CSU students
You can find employers in a few ways:
✅ Search for employers directly in Handshake’s Employer Directory
✅ Explore CSU-curated employer collections
✅ Follow employers connected to jobs, internsihps, or events

Step 5. Set Your Profile Visibility Options
Handshake gives you control over who can see your profile and resume. These settings affect whether employers can find you and reach out directly.
If your profile visibility is limited, employers may not be able to:
- View your profile
- Message you about roles
- Discover you through searches or recommendations
