Personal Statement Checklist

Writing a personal statement can feel like a minefield. Even if you’re on the talented end of the writing spectrum and think you’re about to blow your readers’ minds, it would still be strategic to use the following checklist to aid in your construction of a powerful personal statement. Some of the items on the checklist include:

  • Is your introduction engaging? Does it capture your reader’s attention?
  • Are you providing a strong description of your academic abilities (especially as they relate to the program’s content)?
  • Are you writing in first person and using active voice? (active: “the dog chased the ball;” passive: “the ball was chased by the dog”)
  • Are you following the application’s specified length requirements? If no particular length is indicated, you might choose to write 1000-1500 words (1-2 pages).
  • Did you tailor your statement to match the program you’re applying for? When doing so, mention what makes the program unique and why that appeals to you.

Keep track of these items and so many more on this downloadable checklist!
