Leveraging On-Campus Employment for Career Growth

While many on-campus job opportunities may not always seem like they directly align with your future career path, they still offer valuable experiences that employers recognize and appreciate. Employers value work experience — even if it’s not directly related to the job they are hiring for — because it demonstrates reliability, a strong work ethic, and the ability to navigate professional environments. It shows that you can manage responsibilities, work with dynamic teams, solve problems, and adapt to new situations — all qualities that are essential in any workplace.

On-campus employment can help you build a variety of transferable skills for any career, including:

When adding on-campus jobs to your resume, focus on showcasing the skills you developed and how they apply to the roles you’re pursuing. Here are some tips for highlighting transferrable skills:

  • Use action verbs: Start each bullet point with strong action verbs like ‘coordinated,’ ‘led,’ ‘resolved,’ or ‘managed’ to show initiative and impact.
  • Quantify your achievements: Whenever possible, include numbers or measurable outcomes. For example, ‘Managed a team of 5 student employees’ or ‘Resolved 15+ customer inquiries daily.’
  • Connect skills to career goals: Frame your experience in a way that emphasizes how these skills apply to future roles. For instance, if you worked in customer service, you might highlight communication and problem-solving abilities relevant to a business career.
  • Tailor your resume: Adjust your resume to align with the job posting you’re applying for by emphasizing the most relevant skills and experiences from your work history to the role.

To further develop your career competencies, you can utilize LinkedIn Learning, a free resource available to all CSU students.
