You know SOME of what you want: a steady income, work-life balance, time for friends and family, a supportive work culture…But the other details are hazy. Employers don’t like to hear, “I’ll do anything,” so how do you narrow down your host of career options into a few that align with one business concentration area? A great way is to work backward!
Start at the finish line. Ask yourself, “Who could I work for?”
- Find 5 companies or organizations that are making a difference in the world: filling a need you care about or solving a problem that matters to you. Could be that they’re providing affordable housing to Coloradans of lower-socioeconomic status. Or maybe they streamline ordering in food-and-beverage environments using technology!
- Look on the company’s website (or on LinkedIn) to see who works there. What are their roles?
- Ask ChatGPT to give you a detailed description of what someone in that role does over the course of a week. If the description sounds interesting to you…
- Ask Chat which concentration or two (list our eleven options for AI to choose from) would lend itself most effectively to preparing you for those roles.
- Check on the “Where Rams Land” page on each concentration page here on our website to see if any recent grads took a similar role upon graduation.
- See if you can find a mentor on Rams Connect to ask about their experience in a similar role; set up an informational interview with them.
As with any approach to career development, you might have questions along the way. Don’t forget that the CMC is here to support you as you explore and consider options! We have drop-in’s on Mon-Thurs from 10am to 2pm and would be happy to connect with you.
