Let’s be honest. Thinking about your future (i.e. a career that might be a few years ahead) is messy. Stressful. Confusing.
As a college student, your future probably feels like a giant question mark right now. You might be excited, or maybe overwhelmed. Perhaps eager; maybe hesitant. Or maybe you’re just trying to get through upcoming midterms! Wherever you are, you’re not alone. And, you don’t have to figure it all out by yourself.
That’s why we’re here.
The Career Counseling Team in the College of Business exists for one reason: to support you as you navigate your career journey. Not just when you’re working on your resume, applying for internships or jobs, but throughout your time as a student. Whether you’re exploring business concentrations, wondering what you enjoy, or trying to make sense of all the advice and opinions coming your way. We get it.

While likely well-meaning, you might be feeling pressure from friends, family, peers, social media, and maybe even your own expectations. You might wish someone could just tell you what to do. We hear that a lot. And while we wish we had a magic wand, we don’t. We don’t have all the answers. We won’t tell you what you should do. But we will help you ask better questions, explore possibilities, and build confidence in your own decisions.
Working with the CMC’s Career Counseling Team isn’t about figuring it all out. It’s about starting where you are, being curious, and getting support from people who want to help you succeed, on your terms.
What You Might Be Thinking (and What’s More Helpful)
As we approach midterms, we’ve already had nearly 400 meetings between students and The Career Counseling Team to talk about their career questions, goals, and ideas. The number keeps growing.
We’ve noticed some common beliefs about career counseling. If any of these sound familiar, you’re definitely not alone.
I need to know what I want to do for a career before I go to the CMC.
Actually, no. And you probably don’t. There’s no expectation that you have a plan before you come in. In fact, many students come to see us because they’re unsure. We help you explore options, reflect on what matters to you, and take (small) steps forward.
Career counseling is just for resumes and interview prep.
We love to help with those, but that’s just one of the many career conversations we can have. We also talk about values, strengths, decision-making, building professional connections, and navigating uncertainty. Your career development is a process, and we’re here to help with all parts of it.
You probably don’t have enough expertise in my field to be helpful.
We hear this sometimes, and we get where it’s coming from. Our team works with students from every concentration and interest area, so we’re generalists by design. But that doesn’t mean we can’t help. In fact, our broader perspective often helps students see connections, ask new questions, and think creatively about their options. When deeper industry-specific insight is needed, we’ll help you find the right people or resources to get it.
I’ll figure it out later.
You probably will. But starting now, even with small steps, can make things easier and less stressful down the road. Starting now gives you more time to explore, pivot, and uncover opportunities you might not be expecting.
I’m not sure what I need, so I’m not sure it’s worth coming in.
That’s ok. You don’t need to have a clear question or goal to start a conversation with us. We’re here to help you sort through the uncertainty, not to judge or prescribe. Think of us as thought partners: people who are trained to listen, ask good questions, and help you move forward, one step at a time.
