Tips I Learned in my Job Search & Interview Preparation

After several years of hard work on your business degree, it can be nerve wracking to begin the job search. Many students experience months of applying before receiving an offer. Just know that this is normal!

Here are Strategies that Worked for Me

Company Research: I found several companies and started doing my research. This included their mission, vision, values, and their reviews. After applying for a few, I was invited to my first interview, for which I was both nervous and excited!

Interview Preparation: To prepare for the interview, I started drafting a large list of behavioral questions along with the common questions such as “Tell me about yourself” and “What are your strengths and weaknesses.” Then I jotted done answers that came to mind. The goal here is NOT to memorize your responses but simply brainstorm your past experiences. This gives you a collection of stories to choose from when being interviewed.

With my experience as a Mock Interview Specialist, I knew that behavioral questions should be answered using the STAR method:

Situation – Task – Action – Result

This helps to talk about a past experience in an organized and concise fashion. Remember to focus on what YOU did in the situation and how that led to the result, even when it was in a group situation.

Self-care: After compiling your list of responses, make sure to read them occasionally, before your interview to jog your memory. While you’re preparing, try to take care of yourself, because as the saying goes, you cannot pour from an empty cup.

When it’s time for the interview, wear something you feel confident in. If possible, bring some water with you as it can help you to remember to relax and take a sip during the interview.

Just know that whatever the outcome is, you have worked very hard, and it is only a matter of time until you land your job!
