Tips for Recent Grads Who Are Job Searching
You walked across the stage, flipped your tassel, threw your hat (retrieved it), partied with friends and family, and then what? Well, many of you went back to your part-time job the next week and continued applying for more career-relevant positions when you could make the time. It can be draining applying for jobs, so we have a few suggestions for you as you continue your hunt!
- Make yourself a company list. Fill it with 40 companies you’d be interested to work for (let ChatGPT help you make the list!) and link all of their careers pages so you can click through them twice a week. A lot of companies don’t post their openings on LinkedIn/Indeed – don’t miss out because you’re only checking job boards!
- Reach out to alumni on LinkedIn and Rams Connect who are working in an area that interests you. Ask about their experience with their company, their position, their advice. Feel free to keep track of them in your company list spreadsheet! Stay in touch with the ones who were helpful (two months later, shoot them an email to thank them again for the conversation and ask a follow-up question – just to stay on their radar).
- Make sure that you’re tailoring your resume (and cover letter) to match the job descriptions you’re applying for – use the keywords you see listed, talk about how you have the required skills, even mention the job title somewhere!
- Feel so free to check in with a career counselor in the CMC for support along the way – we’re here for you even after you graduate!
You’ve got this! It takes time, but COB grads get it done!
