As a business student, you probably hear a lot about strategy in your classes, and rightly so. A strategic plan is the foundation of a successful, profitable business. Similarly, taking a strategic, planned approach to the Career Fair will set you up for a productive, successful event.
Here are 4 strategies to help you find success at the Career Fair:
1. Know your why.
Getting clear on your reason for attending the Career Fair will shape how you approach the event. Are you seeking a summer internship? Identifying post-graduation job opportunities? Are there specific career paths you want to learn about? Or do you simply want to get comfortable attending your first recruiting event? Identifying a purpose helps you create a plan of action.
2. Do some pre-work.
Focus on these actions days in advance to set yourself up for success!
- Who will you visit? Review the employer list and identify companies to talk with. Consider employers with openings that match, as well as companies in industries that interest you. Research position descriptions from Handshake and the employer’s career website. Prioritize your list so you know how to determine the best use of time at the fair.
- What will you say? Introducing yourself is sometimes the hardest part. Give your professional introduction some thought to get off on a positive footing.
- What do you want to learn? Are you curious about training programs? Recruiting timelines? Trends or exciting initiatives in the industry or company? Is there something in a job posting you want to know more about? Create questions that will guide conversations toward your goals.
3. Have a game plan.
Showing up with a structured plan of action will build confidence and help you stay on track.
- Bring your research. Have your list of companies along with your notes in a nice folder or notebook. Refer to it before each visit to refresh on important items for each conversation.
- Warm up. When you arrive, take a lap around the space. Visit a lower priority or random company table as your first stop. Consider it a practice round to shake out the nerves.
- Be curious and interested. Asking great questions will give you confidence. Employers will sense your interest. Ask for contact information and offer your resume if they haven’t already asked for it. Thank each person you speak with. It’s okay to take some swag too.
4. Bring a snack, take breaks, make notes.
Take a break after each conversation in the quiet student prep room to write down takeaways and next steps. Make note of who you spoke with. You’ll be glad to have the notes after a full event. Gather yourself for the next conversation. Remember to bring a snack to keep your strength up.
As with all strategies and plans, be ready to adjust if something comes up. Trust yourself and your natural way of doing things. You’ve got this! May you have much success at the Career Fair!
